Rang in this New Year at the Grand Canyon. What a place to see the last sunset of 2003 and first sunrise 2004! The Canyon does not disappoint! And some of the most spectacular views, believe it or not, are thanks to architect Mary Colter. Between 1905 and 1935, Colter designed seven Grand Canyon landmarks for the Fred Harvey Company to serve the waves of tourists they lured to the Great South West via the Santa Fe Railroad.
Who can resist climbing the stone stairs that lead to the top of The Watchtower or taking refuge fireside in Hermit?s Rest? The fantasy-insitu appeal of Colter?s work grabbed me hard. Is this the missing link between faux-groto Gothic and Disneyland?s tiny ?Tyrolean village?
