Free write. Read the essay prompt and then write whatever comes to mind, Glancy says. It doesn't matter if it makes sense, it can be stream of consciousness, it doesn't have to make a point -- but it does need to be in complete sentences, because those are also complete thoughts. Write a lot, too. Glancy suggests the free write be three times the length of the final essay. The point of the free write is to find what you really want to say. "I always suggest not to worry about an order of ideas, don't worry about an introduction, just write, write, write," Glancy says. "Then you read what you've written to figure out what you're trying to say."
